Fire to the prisons—

Based in Southern California, Power Blossoms is an abolitionist organization bringing together queer and trans people on both sides of prison walls in the fight against hierarchies and State oppression.

Through our letter-writing program, we refuse the boundaries forcibly erected between us and open up lines of contact that guide the rest of our work. This contact includes care packages to stave off the conditions of constant emergency designed to subdue defiance, legal support in the service of autonomy and self-advocacy, and reentry support that prioritizes mutual aid in order to grow the capacity of our own communities.

We’re operating now in a crisis that has ravaged California’s disgusting prison system for over a year—and to which LGBTQ people have been especially vulnerable. In response, we compiled a guide to navigating COVID-19 in prison that was based on letters sharing what was happening inside we received over many months. When the time came to help incarcerated people get the stimulus checks they were legally entitled to, we made a guide for that as well!

Power Blossoms is organized and funded entirely by community efforts. We are not a nonprofit; we have no staff; we take no money from the State or private foundations. Please consider donating the cost of a stamp to help us continue communicating with our members inside—and get involved now if you can help sow the seeds for our future work.

COVID-19 Response

Although we plan to keep up as much of our other programming as possible, our biggest concern is the spread of COVID-19 inside prisons, jails, and detention centers. Incarcerated people cannot practice voluntary social-distancing and have no access to protective masks; they are being placed on brutal lockdowns instead. We’ve reshaped all our core projects to address this situation:

Write a Birthday Card from Home!

As we can’t currently hold in-person letter-writing events, we’ve found a way to make our card-writing program available entirely online. All submissions to our online system—which also accepts photos and scans of handwritten cards and artwork—will be printed and mailed by hand so that we can help our LGBTQ family feel celebrated on their birthday. Replies to these cards will in turn inform our COVID-19 response:
